Discusses financial matters; sent him the Henry Crane letter; wants him to return the proofs for his Markham book; says New England is ringing with Markham's praises; also saw the Syracuse paper in witch he gets only praises; sent him a clipping of the article "The Hoe Man of Today" in the Zion's Herald; can't wait for him to dig in on "The Forgotten Purpose of Jesus."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
